Do I Need A Blog?

I've been thinking of adding a blog to the mix as a kind of hammock between the headline world of MovieCityNews and the in-depth daily column, The Hot Button. Not every thought can be expressed in 10 words or less and not every idea deserves a full column.

This would also be the first chance that readers would have to respond to content without being run through my e-mail box.

So what do you think? Good idea or bad idea?

Comments

Good idea. Superb idea. And so on.

What sorts of thoughts would be blog-worthy as opposed to column-worthy, though?

Very good idea! Blog away!

A blog would be a bit different, and maybe timely for the up to the minute news. Of course, Poland, if you start blogging, then good look trying to stop. Again, it would be something different, and another way to stay in contact with readership.

So go ahead, and see where it goes.

My sense is that there is a formailty to writing a column that is different than writing a blog... all very experimental though.

Agreed.
Welcome to the blogosphere!

As Long as you make me as Reader of the Day, Yes, You can have your own blog.

Does David Poland need a blog?
Yes, and more importantly, we need David Poland to need a blog.

Congratulations!

Great idea! I can't believe you haven't started a blog earlier.

I'm not sure how I feel about it, but it could work out. You should go with it and see what happens.

My brother runs a conservative blog there in your backyard and it's amazing the diversity of hits and comments he gets. I think a David Poland blog is just what the industry needs! Bravo!

Now that you are officially a blogger, all is right in the universe.

Well, besides the fact that Without A Paddle is making a fortune, that is...

I am all for a blog as long as the content of the daily site doesn't suffer.

The truth of the matter is that David Poland *only* needs a blog. Given the frequency of late or missed columns, and the fact that about half of them are multipartite, it's basically perfect for a blog. (Not to mention how much easier it would be to navigate the archives with something like Typepad, with its built-in search function and automatic archiving.) (Not to mention that it takes out the middle man in terms of HTMLing a column.) I'm sure it's more romantic, or "respectable," to be a columnist instead of a blogger, but that's a false dichotomy, particularly to the reader.

Great idea. I'll definitely check up on your ramblings every few days at this site...or more frequent if you become a blog maniac.

I'd vote no for the blog.
I'm sure you could do a good one, but you're already doing a fine job.
Problem with blogs is that even the best ones tend to run on. They encourage
verbosity, which is a bad thing.

Very good idea David, I look forward to seeing what you do with this space.

I second Sean's remark: you no longer need the Hot Button column.

Sure, a "column" gives you the chance to organize your ideas and hammer out something more substantial; feel free to keep doing that. But I hope you find that the blog lets you comment, jot, remark, and publish everything from the gems to the unrefined, making your "polished" writing better.

Think outside the column!

I have the tendency to read BLOGS/LJ's more than columns and site, so this is something that I know I can catch up on easier (as I find the links on THB to be outdated sometimes).

Hope you don't lose momentum on your columns...which are a weekly read for me as well!

You definitely need a blog, and I do think that it is possible that the blog and the column may end up merging at some point once you get more comfortable with the blogging world.

I also want to comment here that I have set up a syndicated feed account at Livejournal.com for your blog. Users of that service can add "davidpoland" as a "friend" and get links to your entries as you make them.
